NEW DELHI: The government has approved the construction of 100,537 more affordable homes under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) with an investment of Rs 4,200 crore.
Madhya Pradesh got 57,131 homes sanctioned, followed by Tamil Nadu with 24,576 homes, Manipur with 6,231, Chattisgarh with 4,898, Gujarat with 4,261, Assam with 2,389, Kerala with 643, Jharkhand with 331 and Daman & Diu with 77 homes, the government said in a release.
With this, the ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation (HUPA) has so far approved 1,875,389 homes for the economically weaker sections under PMAY(Urban) in 2,151 cities and towns in 34 states and union territories (UTs), with a total investment of Rs 1,00,466 crore.
Around 1,065,058 houses were approved under the beneficiary led construction component of PMAY (Urban), wherein beneficiaries get a central assistance of Rs 1.50 lakh each to undertake new construction or enhancement of existing houses.
A total of 587,115 homes have been sanctioned under affordable housing in partnership under which state governments provide land/financial assistance for housing projects for which central assistance of Rs 1.50 lakh each is given per beneficiary.
The government launched its flagship ‘Housing for All by 2022′ mission on June 25, 2015 and is focusing on 15 states and union territories (UTs) to meet the Housing for All target by 2019.
The states under focus are Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, along with the UTs of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu and Puducherry.
Other states have been asked to submit proposals by 2018 so that construction could be completed by 2022.
The government had also asked states and UTs to undertake fresh demand survey for affordable housing, and the process is close to completion.
Walls N Roof Comment : Affordable housing for all by 2022 is an ambitious mission rolled out by the government in 2015. Affordable housing looks to empower the economically weaker sections society in lieu for having their respective dwelling units. The government has sanctioned construction for a total of 1,875,389 homes. The construction for primary 15 States & UT’s is envisioned to be completed by 2019. The government has announced a lot of schemes and subsidies to boost the affordable housing segment.
