L&T Construction bags Rs 2,900 crore order to redevelop BDD chawls in Mumbai’s Worli

MUMBAI: The buildings & factories business of L&T Construction has bagged a key design-and-build order worth Rs 2,903 crores to redevelop Mumbai’s century-old BDD chawls at Worli for Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).

The contract is the largest residential project awarded to L&T Construction till date, the company said in a release.

“The BDD Chawls are one of Mumbai’s most enduring features and by winning the mandate to rehabilitate them, we have another huge opportunity to build India’s maximum city,” said S.N. Subrahmanyan, Deputy MD & President, Larsen & Toubro.

The scope of work comprises complete design and construction of 20 residential towers including 3 basements, ground plus 23 floors for rehabilitation. The project will also include construction of four high-rise towers with 3 basements, ground plus 72 floors for sale and one commercial development with 3 basements, ground plus 21 floors within a plot area of 16 acres along with MEP, finishes, onsite/offsite infrastructure, landscaping, demolition of existing structures and logistics involved in the rehabilitation of the current occupants.

Developed by the British in the 1920s, around 207 buildings in Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) chawls are spread over 93 acres across south Mumbai’s Worli, Lower Parel, Sewri and Naigaon locality. Of theses, Worli has the highest number of buildings, at 121, while Naigaon and Lower Parel have 42 and 32 buildings, respectively.
